Put Product Hunt right in your Mac’s menu bar

Product Hunt, a popular Y Combinator-backed service that lets users share and discover new products, earlier this month unveiled a thoroughly revamped iPhone and iPad application that puts fun back into product discovery.

It’s a gorgeously done app that I use every day and it’s made me want that experience on my Mac. Lo and behold, Product Hunt for Mac. A tiny, official client for your Mac, this app puts Product Hunt’s familiar round “P” icon right into your Mac’s menu bar, where it sits and dutifully awaits a click of the mouse to present you with the latest popular products, games, books and podcasts on Product Hunt.
The Mac app is one of those most popular Topics on Product Hunt and over the past year, we’ve seen a lot of interest specifically in menu bar apps,”said Product Hunt founder and CEO Ryan Hoover. The app is written 100 percent in Swift, Apple’s new programming language for iOS and OS X development.
It took about two weeks to build the core functionality, followed by about another week of polishing, bug-fixing, and some smaller feature additions, like the ‘firehose control’ in the settings,” he said.
The app features a subtle notification counter increments when new things are trending on Product Hunt, surfacing posts at the top of the feed with a red dot. It’s a pretty capable app that works as advertised. My only quibble with it is that it’s a bit difficult to read the number of up votes in clear grey and that I’m unable at least to vote right from my Mac’s menu bar.
Developers are aware of these complaints and are already working on an update. “We’d like to add more interactivity to it, too, such as the ability to add to collections,” Hover hinted.

Apple’s environmental webpage hints at ‘MacOS’ name Change

More evidence that Apple is planning to rebrand OS X to MacOS in the near future has been discovered on Apple’s environmental webpage. First spotted by 9to5Mac, the recently updated page specifically refers to “MacOS” devices.
The news follows a March report that pointed to a MacOS reference hidden inside OS X code. And of course the change has long been speculated about, as it would bring the desktop OS branding in line with Apple’s other platforms.
Here’s the latest reference, which you can find on Apple’s Environment – Answers page, in the “How does Apple conduct its Product Greenhouse Gas Life Cycle Assessment?” section.
While this appears to confirm the impending rebranding, we won’t know for sure until it happens. It does seem likely, though, that if Apple is going to rename OS X to MacOS, we’ll hear about it at the upcoming developer conference in June.

Apple Invents Stackable Ports for MacBook

It’s still only a patent, but Apple has a clever way to overcome the need for more ports on laptops: magnetic stackable expansion ports. Apple was just granted a patent for the idea, and it could find its way not only to the MacBook, but to the iPad, too.
Apple patent 9,300,083, titled “Stackable Magnetically-Retained Connector Interface,” describes a system where a single-port computer, like the MacBook, has a special MagSafe-style connector where USB, Ethernet, video, and other ports could be stacked together.
This looks like a clever way to overcome the concern some people have over the MacBook’s single USB C port and address situations where wireless device connections aren’t an option. It’s also intriguing as a potential iPad feature because it would expand the flexibility of Apple’s tablet and make it an easier laptop alternative.
There isn’t any guarantee Apple will bring its magnetic port connector to its products, but it looks like a great idea that hopefully will show up at some point.
