New Mac backdoor program steals keychain contents

Researchers have identified a new Mac backdoor program that’s designed to steal credentials stored in the OS-encrypted keychain and give attackers control over the system.

Dubbed OSX/Keydnap by researchers from antivirus vendor ESET, this is the second backdoor program targeting Macs found by antivirus firms in the past few days.

It’s not clear how Keydnap is distributed, but it arrives on computers in the form of a zip archive. Inside there’s an executable file with an apparently benign extension such as .txt or .jpg that actually has a space character at the end. The file also has an icon indicating an image or text file.

Opening this malicious file in Finder actually executes its code in the Terminal application. The execution happens really fast, with the Terminal window just flashing for a bit. The good news is that if the file is downloaded from the internet and the Gatekeeper security feature is turned on on the latest versions of OS X, the file won’t be executed automatically and the user will see a security warning.

However, if the code is executed, it will download and install the backdoor component, called icloudsyncd, which connects to a command-and-control channel over the Tor anonymity network. If it has root access, this component also configures itself to start every time the Mac is rebooted.

The way it tries to obtain root access is also interesting. It will wait until the user runs a different application and it will immediately spawn a window asking for the user’s credentials, exactly like the window OS X users usually see when an application requires admin privileges.

The backdoor can receive commands from the control server to update itself, to download and execute files and scripts, to execute shell commands and to send back the output. It also includes a component that steals the contents of the OS X keychain.

This component seems to be based on open-source, proof-of-concept code published on GitHub. It reads the memory of the securityd OS X service, which handles the keychain access, and searches for the keychain decryption key. Once it has this key, it can exfiltrate user credentials stored inside.

While infecting Macs with malware is arguably more difficult than PCs, especially in the latest version of OS X with all the security features turned on, Keydnap shows that attackers can still come up with creative ways to trick users and exploit their habits.

macOS Sierra public beta now available: Here’s how to get started

If you want to get your hands on the next version of the Mac operating system, now’s your chance. Apple on Thursday made available the public beta of macOS Sierra, the successor to OS X EL Capitan.

To get the beta, you must sign up for the Apple Beta Software Program, which requires an Apple ID. The Sierra beta installer is downloaded through the Mac App Store.

Before running the installer, be sure to back up your data. Remember, this is beta software, and it’s possible that some of the software you have may have problems.

There are a couple of conditions that Apple has if you want to use the Sierra beta:You’re encouraged to use the bundled Feedback Assistant app to tell Apple about any issues you have with the Sierra beta.

The Sierra beta is “Apple confidential information.” Essentially, it’s for your eyes only. You’re not supposed to post screenshots of the Sierra beta on the internet, and you’re not supposed to discuss the software with anyone who is not also enrolled in the Beta Software Program.

Installing the beta will not void your Mac’s warranty. And when the final version of Sierra is released this fall, you can upgrade from the beta.

If you install the beta and decide later that you want to go back to your previous operating system, you have erase your drive completely, reinstall the previous operating system, and then restore your data from a backup.

MacOS Sierra beta 2 released to Apple’s registered developers

Apple today pushed a second beta of macOS Sierra following the original developer-only preview of the desktop operating system that was made available following the June 13 WWDC keynote. Members of the Apple Developer Program can install macOS Sierra beta 2 on their computers running a prior beta through the Software Update mechanism.
We’ll be updating the article with any changes discovered in macOS Sierra beta 2 as we discover them.
In addition to rebranding OS X as macOS, the upcoming software update brings a bunch new features to the Mac, including deeper integration with iOS and expanded Continuity features.
For starters, Siri is now available on the Mac to help you do the things you do every day on your desktop using the power of your voice. Expanded integration with iCloud makes your Mac’s Desktop and Documents folder available on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch via iCloud Drive.
Universal Clipboard works between iOS and macOS, allowing you to copy text, images, photos and video from one Apple device and paste it in another. Sierra also includes Safari 10 with support for Picture-in-Picture, native App Extensions and Apple Pay on websites.
Like iOS 10, macOS Sierra packs in an enhanced Photos app with a new Memories feature that uses advanced facial and objet recognition, and more.

Developer Beta 2 is out for iOS 10, macOS Sierra, watchOS 3, and tvOS 10

Developer Beta 2 is out for iOS 10, macOS Sierra, watchOS 3, and tvOS 10
Developers, don your Upgrading Gloves, because Apple has new betas out for its upcoming operating systems. On Tuesday, Apple released Developer Beta 2 for all four OSes getting upgrades this fall: iOS 10, macOS Sierra (10.12), tvOS 10, and watchOS 3.

Anyone registered in Apple’s $99/year Developer Program can get access to the new betas from the Downloads section of the developer site, or by upgrading devices directly. iOS 10, for example, is available as a configuration profile, and once you install that on a registered iPhone or iPad, updates come in over-the-air in Settings > General > Software Update.

watchOS 3 is updated via the Watch app on a paired iPhone running iOS 10. tvOS 10 is installed by connecting a fourth-gen Apple TV to a Mac with a USB cable and updating via iTunes, or you could try a workaround using Dropbox. To get macOS Sierra, developers simply enter a personalized redemption code in the Mac App Store, and then further updates come that way. Of course, you should always back up before upgrading.

Why this matters: Public betas of macOS Sierra and iOS 10 are expected sometime in July. Last year the first public beta corresponded to the third developer beta, so we might still be a little ways out. Or Apple could decide that Developer Beta 2 is stable enough to unleash to beta testers, and we could see it fairly soon. If you’re interested in helping Apple kick the tires of iOS 10 and macOS Sierra, you can sign up for the public beta and be notified as soon as it’s ready.

6 Great Display Choices for Your MacBook Pro and Mac Pro

Apple is getting out of the stand-alone display market—at least for now—and says there are plenty of third-party alternatives to its now defunct Thunderbolt Display. Sorting out which display to buy can be a little intimidating, so The Mac Observer put together a list with some great 4K, 5K, and HD options to help make your shopping a little easier.
Dell’s PCs don’t have a great reputation, but don’t let that keep you away from their displays—especially the P2715Q. This 27-inch 4K display offers 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, includes HDMI, DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, USB 3.0 ports, audio out, and VESA support. At US$499.99, it won’t break your bank, either.
HP is serious about their displays, and the Z27s is no exception. The display boasts a 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio, HDMI, DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, USB 3.0, and VESA support. It costs a little more than Dell’s P2715Q, but TMO’s John Martellaro thinks it’s totally worth the $641.19 price tag.

The UP2715K from Dell is a lot sexier than its name sounds with excellent 27-inch image quality, DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, USB 3.0, built-in media card reader, built-in speakers, and VESA support. It’s priced at $1,539.99.

Another great 5K display choice is HP’s 27-inch Z27q. It supports a 60 Hz refresh for both 4K and 5K resolutions, offers a 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio, includes HDMI, DisplayPort 1.2 and Mini DisplayPort, MHL, USB 3.0, and audio out ports, and VESA support. You can pick up the Z27q for $1,042.51
34-inches and curved aren’t typically words you’d associate with budget monitors, but at $230 less than Apple’s defunct Thunderbolt display, HP’s Envy 34c qualifies. The display’s resolution clocks in at 3440×1440 with a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, HDMI and MHL/HDMI ports, DisplayPort, USB 3.0, built-in speakers, and VESA support. John Martellaro and I both think it rocks, and at $769 you can’t beat the price.

Asus may not be the first company you think of when you’re display shopping, but it turns out the PB278Q is a really nice monitor at a surprisingly affordable price. This 27-inch display offers 2560×1440 resolution with DisplayPort 1.2, HDMI 1.4, and DVI-D ports, 80,000,000:1 contrast ratio, built-in speakers, and VESA support. The price is right, too, at $389.

MacOS Sierra Drops Support for Several Mac Models

Apple unveiled macOS Sierra during the keynote presentation at its Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday, and for the past few years new versions haven’t left any Macs behind. That changes with the operating system formerly known and OS X, so read on to see if your Mac is up to snuff.

macOS Sierra introduces new features like Siri for the Mac, clipboards that can be shared with your other Apple devices, Apple Pay for the Web, auto login via Apple Watch, Desktop and Documents folder access from other devices, picture-in-picture videos, and more.

If you’re Mac was made prior to 2009, you won’t be upgrading to macOS Sierra. This is the first Mac operating system update since OS X Mountain Lion from 2012 that drops support for older models.

Here’s the list of Mac support mac OS Sierra:

That’s a fairly short compatibility list compared to previous Mac operating system upgrades. That said, it isn’t too surprising to see older models drop off the support list considering many more modern features such as Continuity and Metal graphics weren’t supported.

Still, Apple is supporting six year old Macs on macOS Sierra, so that’s not to shabby.
